A great day at Coastal Board Gamers, with over thirty people in attendance. A special shout out to our newcomer Matt!

 

A great variety of games were brought to the table. The Tiny Towns game started with a minor argument over the meaning of the world Contiguous. Honestly, more people should learn the meaning of the word orthogonal. That would make board games so much easier to teach. Carl began his domination of Root early on, getting a lot of orange cats onto the board. Penny brought our her favourite Pyramido before moving onto Funfair. Despite a huge cinema trying to dominate game play, the punters proved they were there for the roller-coasters and Ferris wheels.

 

The Role Playing table had an interesting scenario running where everyone was a level zero character. Basically, peasants. Although, one person did have a scimitar. Suspiciously, they proved very handy with it, and much blood ensued.

 

 The Scythe board had a surprising, last minute addition, as Hayden arrived just after the teach and was able to bring the player count up to five – my favourite number when playing Scythe. Surprises aside, Anna and her huge bear, Wotjek, managed to pull off the win with too many stars to catch.

 

The Thunderspeaker, Devouring Teeth and Eyes Watching tried to repel the invaders of Spirit Island. This went badly at first, but once the mushrooms were established they spirits were able to fight back.

 

We also saw Project L throwing shapes. The Quacks in Quedlinburg managed to keep the rats mostly out of their potions. The Star Realms quickly got down to battle with some truly massive hits able to finish things off. Three Kingdoms proved to be an interesting game, that requires exactly three players and works surprisingly well against the tactic of two ganging up on one.

 

Western Legends sprawled across another table, and saw a lot mining, visiting the entertainment establishment, gambling, cattle rustling, and not nearly enough stealing and backstabbing, mostly thanks to one character’s constant failures at this.

 

There was even a game of Hey, That’s My Fish.

Event Report from Narelle

What fun and a range of games played at this weekend’s event.  I personally learnt a heavyish game – Wayfarers of the South Tigris – Ettienne as always is a great teacher.  Michael then taught me Ship Shape – a fun game trying to bid for different levels of ship you want to get the most Gold and weapons, and contraband – but not the most cos that person gets caught, I had been wanting to learn this for a while and am glad I finally did. Then I learnt Wormholes from Tim, a fun entry level type game – which really felt like you were zipping through wormholes in space. I then taught Honey Buzz – a worker placement game which includes a market and very cute bees making honey. I then finished off the night with a very light but fun game – and just a little bit of cut throatiness Hey that’s my fish. Thanks to all who made it a great night and thanks to all the people who help set up and pack up and clean up at the end of the night. I know I really appreciate it.

Saturday the 2nd of September was a great night for introducing a bunch of new people to our hobby. We had a presence at the Expo of Everything in Devonport, an event organised by the City Council to learn something new, make connections, join a club, learn a new skill, take up a new hobby. Along with Penny’s excellent recruiting skills we had quite a few new member show up. A larger selection of gateway games were selected to get our newbies up to speed. We had Splendor Duel, Monster Madness, and the old favourites Labyrinth and Nidavellir.

 

Meanwhile, Myself and Lynette did our best hosting duties, welcoming everyone, pointing out where the toilets are, explaining the general flow of the evening, and blasting everyone with music from the speakers and far too high a volume.

 

Our ongoing Near and Far campaign rolled through it’s next section in the book.

 

Mike laid out the latest, compact, COIN game called People Power. This is based on the Philippine revolution that booted the Marcos regime from power in the 1980s. It plays much quicker that the other COIN (COunter INsurgency) games and looks like a great way to introduce new players to the mechanics present in the other, larger games such as Cuba Libre, Fire in the Lake, Falling Sky and so on.

 

Circadians: First Light attracted a good group of players, interested in the idea of being researchers introducing themselves to a newly discovered planet and the complexities of the various tribes there-upon.

 

Dinner was an interesting time, getting to know the newcomers. There were also a few announcements about our next events. The RU OK to play day, which CBG will be supporting on the 16th of September, is shaping up to be a great time There was also some fun news for the upcoming Trivia Night on the 28th of October, with the announcement of a costume competition! It does coincide with the Halloween weekend, after all.

 

After dinner things swung back into the usual rhythm of Penny’s inevitable game of Catan, and a good variety of other games. I got to join in on a game of Twilight Inscription, which is a roll and write version of Twilight Imperium. It’s one of the more complex roll and writes, and while it doesn’t have the overall feel of the longer board game, it does a great job distilling some of those moments down to a fun playing experience. War Suns for the win.

 

Overall, we played many games and had a lot of fun. We hope you can join us for our next session on the 16th of September.

The 20th of May 2023 was another great night for games at Coastal Board Gamers. We played:

And welcomed a new member Cathryn, who thoroughly enjoyed herself.

 

Our brave heroes of the Marvel group attempted to thwart the dastardly plans of Thanos. They were defeated. Twice. I guess we all survived the snap? Or is Thanos still missing a stone or two in this timeline?

 

Fortunately, there were plenty of other games played. Like many of our recent meetings we had a wide variety of games with a group engrossed in party games and word games, like Paperback and Uno Flip. Other tables held some more strategic games like Steam Up and Bunny Kingdom. No, seriously, there’s a game called Bunny Kingdom, and it is highly strategic.

 

The big game of the evening was Hegemony, the new hotness involving asymmetrical play with the players taking on various factions in society from peasants through to capitalists, prompting various groans and exclamations as small shifts on the board held great consequences for all players. Talita’s cry of, “Capitalism for the win!” signalled her hard-fought victory.

We are getting better at organising the dinner time in our new venue, and it’s proving a great moment to take a break and chat with the other members over food. We may need to include a couple more seats at the table if the group gets any larger. There were no major announcements to make, except, of course, for the imminent Meeple Escape awesome weekend of gaming. There will be a report on that soon.

 

I got to introduce Castles of Burgundy to a couple of new players, James and Cathryn. James proceeded to then beat me at my own game, but we were playing on different board. And the dice were mean to me, mumble, mumble, gamer’s excuses, mumble. Also, I was distracted by cries of, “You can’t take the sky from me!” and “May the fore be with you!” from the table playing Star Trek Frontiers.

 

Our next regular event will be on Saturday, June 3rd. We’d love to see you all there.

Going clubbing? Poetry for Neanderthals provided the big distraction tonight. Penny wielded her inflatable power with reckless abandon. Hands up all those who escaped being bonked on the head. No? Me neither.

 

The roadworks were behaving themselves very well on my drive in, so I arrived surprisingly early and began to set up the tables, with Tim turning up in time to make sure I’d done it properly. This was disappointing to Talita and her gang of volunteers only to find nothing to do except play some board games.

The table hog winner this week went to the new Lacerda game, Weather Machine, which had several boards, many moving parts and even cute robots.

 

After dutifully manning the welcome table, I managed to get in a Lord of the Rings reference during dinner, when I announced it was eleventy one days until the Meeple Escape! Book your tickets by clicking here. Then I got down to the serious gaming by (finally!) playing Underwater Cities, which I’ve been interested to play since its release, a few years ago. A nice game of synergies and city building, with some excellent guidance from the game cards as to which aspects players should focus on.

 

Say Anything produced its usual, raucous background which helped to carry the neolithic theme with two games of Stone Age and Nidavellir (which has something to do with rocks).

 

The end of the evening held a memorable two player game of Food Chain Magnate, with all the expansions. All of them. Carl and Cat managed to break the game between them very quickly.

Welcome, folkes, to my first wrap up as a new Committee member!

 

In spite of the floods, rain and terrible condition of the roads leading into Lilico, we had an excellent turn out. I am assured that the wonky label printing will be sorted out by the next event, but the evening did involve a few examples of having to ask people their name. Fortunately, all of the attendees were able to remember, and responded accordingly.

We played an interesting selection of games over the course of the evening, with many smaller games getting to the table, amidst the bigger games. The evening was dominated by a six player game of Eclipse (second edition), which, I understand, went very badly for Carl thanks to Talita’s aggressive expansion. The ending I missed, as I was thoroughly involved in my own game of Obsession at that point, which may become my new obsession. Perhaps one of the Eclipseers could give us a quick blow-by-blow in the comments below.

My excellent organisational skills were on display as our pizza night only had one slice left over. This was lucky, as my terrible serving skills were also on display resulting in my dropping a slice on the floor.

 

During dinner we heard some interesting accounts from people able to attend PAX Aus. Narelle and Marion, James and I all told of the shiny wonders in that great exhibition hall across the waters.

Overall, a really fun event. As the person on the door I found it particularly nice to be able to greet everyone, new faces and old, and see people engrossed in their enjoyment.

 

Next event is the first weekend in November (Saturday the 5th) from 2pm to 10pm. To tide us over this longer break there is also a Trivia Night! This will also be held at Fuchsia Fantasy on Saturday October 29th, from 7pm to 10pm.
