Those were the amazing games we played together on a cold winter’s night in June.

I had never heard of the game Sand until Jen taught me how to play.  Pickup-and-deliver in a strange desert land while riding giant caterpillars.  Three different types of roads offer various transit speeds between the towns and require a range of resources to keep your faithful caterpillar in good form.  While visiting a town, sing a song to make the folk happy and raise more funds from future sales.

Moon River has outstanding cow meeples and allows each player to build a personal landscape while seeking fortune in the west.

Winter Games Fest Report by Carl

This year I was lucky enough to attend HoGS Winter Fest. The southern all weekend board gaming event was fantastic. It was great to meet some new people and catch up with friends from Meeple Escape over the years.

We started the event with a long-planned game of Here I stand, a game about the Reformation Wars of the 1500’s. I know that just sounds like a history lesson, but the game was amazing. We then went on to play Smart Phone Inc. to round out the night.

Sunday, we introduced Lu to Coin Games! We spent the day playing Red Dust Rebellion, a Coin game set when Earth has been ruined by humanity and the need to colonize Mars has become a reality. Consisting of 4 asymmetrical factions, Red Dust Rebellion has the players fighting for control of the red planet through terrorist attacks, police enforcement and corporate greed. 2 players want to create a Mars that is safe for the people of Earth including politically, environmentally and to make a profit while doing it! The other 2 factions form the rebels, 1 wanting to fight the government and what they stand for, the other wanting to keep Mars the same and not have it end up like Earth.

The event was a success with 9-10 games running at any one time. The atmosphere was light and relaxed allowing for some real focus on the table. There were 2 games of Blood on the Clocktower running at one point and a Harmonies tournament.

Thank you to the HoGS committee for organising the Winter Fest event.

I can’t wait to see you all again next year!
