Campaign Corner Report

It’s been a while since I have done one of these so I thought I could shine a light on what happens before the board games come out. The morning of each CBG Event we have Campaign Corner. A place where Table Top Role Play Game’s (TTRPG’s), Campaign style board games and other long format games meet. We currently have 2 tables running, a Dungeons and Dragons table and my table, where we play Daggerheart, a card based TTRPG.

My table have been playing Daggerheart for just over a year now and have really enjoyed it. A narrative driven game where the table as a whole create and drive the story. This means, unlike many other TTRPG’s often I, as the GM (Game Master), will answer a players question about something with a question of my own. For example;
Player: “We head to the market”
GM: “As you come around the corner, the tight alleyway suddenly open into a vast market, you see brokers and stall holders brandishing their goods. A small individual, halfling or light framed dwarf maybe, rushes up to you shoving a large fruit into your face, “want some …” . Describe the fruit and what does he call it.”

This is a simple example, players at my table have created entire society structures and taboos. This game, while still coordinated and directed by 1 individual, the GM, encourages co-operative storytelling and world building.

As a result of this style of play, it can create some very impactful moments. I will not be describing what happened this last event due to spoilers for my players but simply to say those of us who attended the CBG Event only played a few light games and then spent most of the night in debrief and discussion about what happened at the table during Campaign Corner.

It is fantastic that CBG has space for people to sit and discuss without the need of a game. It really does build on that community aspect of the club. The ability to relax a chat while still feeling included in the activities of the night.

Event Report from Hobbo

Mel, Colin, John, Chris, Gwyn and David H were able to play some of Mel’s new games she brought back from Playcon. The games they played were magical athlete and Bristol 1350.

Magical athlete is a game about racing around a track with a multitude of characters to pick from, each with a special action that can trigger at any point throughout the race.

Each game consists of two races using the characters that each person picked, and the winner was the one with most points at the end. Mel won the first game overall and David H won the second.

The second game was Bristol 1350, a game about escaping Bristol, on carts, without getting the plague.
To win this game, whoever was in the carts, must escape Bristol first with everyone having symptom cards four or less. If the first cart has a plagued person on board, the remaining players get one more turn to escape. If no healthy carts leave Bristol, everyone loses.

Throughout the race, Mel abandoned David’s Cart for Colin and Chris’s, which end them escaping Bristol but full of sick people. John and Gwyn crossed second but had sick people on board. Surprising everyone David H managed to cross the finishing line on the final round with no sick people making him the winner.

Spoiler Free Fenris Report

For first time readers or those unfamiliar with Scythe: Rise of Fenris, this game is a story over the top of an already great game, Scythe. As the story progresses the game changes, end game conditions may be different, player strategies or tactics will change and even rules may be altered depending on how the story plays out. As such, it is getting harder as the game continues to keep this blog spoiler free! So much has changed. I have made sure that all photos of the game remain free of any plot points or new game mechanics but let’s just say if you like Scythe, Rise of Fenris is Scythe turned up to 11.
Here we go.

Haydn started the night of with a fast victory. Leaving us all wanting 1 or 2 more turns to get our engines pumping. Speeding through with a double hit of a combat star and an objective star in the one turn left Mel with no stars on the board at all! Not a great start to the evening. With that game over so quick we decided to reset and go again with the next scenario.

The next scenario was a strange one. It started out like the game was halfway, we all had extra workers, a couple of buildings, it was a great boost. I had finally worked out how to use the Wind Gambit Airship and my player ability to move around the board a little more and was off to the races.

The scenario had us on the hunt. The locations to check were the explore tokens. The game would end either buy 6 stars as per normal or by collecting 5 explore tokens. The latter was my goal. I knew I couldn’t beat Haydn with stars or slowing him down, but maybe I could get the tokens before he got his engine rolling! It took a few fast moves and a Factory card to get it done. The Final Explore token allowed me to also helped me trigger another star, so I not only ended the game but claimed victory! Sorry Haydn 😀

Our next and final game has been postponed due to holidays and other game commitments but come September we will find out who is the Grand Winner of the Rise of Fenris!

Event Report from Mike

For everyone who missed CBG last night, you missed out on fun times!

We had a game of Roll Camera – a fun (and silly) game about making a movie. The goal is to shoot 5 movie scenes, and we all took on the roll of Director, Star, Editor, etc..

We nearly ran out of scheduling time and money; on our last dollar we took a gamble- flip a tile 3 times and if we flipped it the right side up twice, gain $4. We rolled it good side, then bad, and after a drum roll… good again! Phew, gambling saved our movie budget.

The player roles also gave a silly “special powers” which has no bearing on the game itself, but leads hilarious role playing. One role lets you direct players to talk faster/slower or in an accent. Another lets you tell players to “shhhh” – be quiet – as if filming on a movie set. Another role lets you ask players to hold “props”, and I found myself holding random Drink coasters and rulebooks in the air (as directed), and it all came to a head with Oakley being asked to hold a chair physically over the table. 🤣 To his credit, he did it. Did it help our game? No… but everyone was laughing.

Back to the game, we decided we couldn’t make a quality masterpiece, so we tanked the quality and ended the game winning by making a movie “so bad it’s good”.

Our hypothetical movie title was “lethal seaside smooches”… coming to a theatre near you.

Note: no chairs were damaged in the playing of this game.

Spoiler Free Fenris Report

Our campaign continues. This event we managed to get another game in, and Haydn didn’t win! So the story continued with more twists and turns, and Haydn gaining an advantage moving forward. I had been hording coins for an objective to have $20 at the end of the game while the others had been whizzing around the map interacting the scenario for this game. Each interaction cost the $1 at the end of the game allowing me to sneak into victory. Clan Albion, my faction, is only able to move 1 hex at a time and therefore was too slow to collect any of the scenario items. This resulted in me not loosing any points at the end of the game and secured my victory, even though I really wanted to interact with the scenario at least once.

I have really enjoyed the Rise of Fenris campaign, especially as it is my first campaign game the excitement of finding out what is next is still very new. We are hoping to have the campaign finished by the end of August and I have already lined up my next campaign style game for when that happens. I’m Hooked!

Thunder Road Vendetta

This game has made the blog so many times these past few months and finally I had an opportunity to play, I’m so glad I did. What silly fun this game is! We have spoken many times about how the game plays so here’s a story instead, something this game is rich in.

The race started off with a dash to The Choke, a narrow canyon lined with high cliffs that would result in destruction if collided with. It would not be the cliffs that claim the first victim of the race, for we were racing on Arrakis, and the worms were hungry. Sensing the vibrations of the White Teams Medium racer they attacked, destroying the vehicle in one bite! On the first straight the Grey Team was already down a racer and that was not a good omen for the rest of their race.

The drivers raced ahead when the road rapidly narrowed. It was the entrance to the canyon and a helicopter for the green team arrived. Guns at the ready to fire upon any to attempted to enter the narrow pass. This wasn’t successful, only causing a few dents, until a contest for the canyon entrance between the Orange and the Green teams, resulted in the Light scout from the same team was pushed back into the path of the helicopter’s bombing run resulting in the first loss for the team. Now Green was also down to 2 cars…

Bursting out of The Choke and entering the Glass Oasis. With slides, ramps and sticky toxic waste this section of the track was rife with excitement and danger. The White teams Heavy Racer had taken the lead, Orange had taken victims, and Green was just trying to extinguish a fire that seemed to never end. It was this fire, reignited by a pot shot from the Orange Teams Light Racer, that immobilised the Green teams Medium racer at the end of the Glass Oasis straight allowing the Orange and White Teams to enter The Zag unchallenged.

The White team, now down to their last racer, pushed ahead striving for the finish line and victory. This was not to be. After collecting a series of hazards, the Heavy vehicle succumbed to its damage and was eliminated from the race. The Green team’s Heavy racer was not about to let the Orange team have an easy victory. They pushed their vehicle to the limit and attempted to catch the leader. While attempting a risky manoeuvre found themselves crashing into a pit trap, being eliminated from the race and giving the Orange team the victory!

Congratulations Tim, you fought hard and had some good rolls along the way. Thank you David for teaching me this wonderful, silly fun game. A fantastic way to end the night.

Game Report from Hobbo

To no one’s surprise, Thunder Road Vendetta makes another appearance here at CBG game night.

Our first race, which consists of new comer Ben and returning racers Maurice, Zac and Hobbo there were many spills, thrills and bad rolls allowing Maurice to win the race.

Race 2 had John taking over for Zac and new comer David D taking over for Ben. Unfortunately Dave didnt survive pass the second map and Hobbo was finished off by John, by the end it was a two horse race, with John taking the win.

Race 3 had Chris take over for John and Dave staying for round 2. After many smashes, crashes, failed jumps and Dave being taken out so close to the finishing line, Chris ended up taking the win.

Narelle played a teaching game of Galactic Cruise with Jim, Mel, and Tim. The depth of theme baked into this game is incredible. Using all the different action areas, cards, tiles and resources feels like building and launching a cruise in space. Once the ship is prepared and resourced the Cruise Coordinator uses Ads to attract guests who buy tickets for the flight. Once launched the guests visit the rooms and buy from onboard shops while cruising the stars, producing various types of income. When guests land on planets, we can film Ads of their experience to gain coveted victory points.

This is a long game but the thematic experience is lots of fun. Thanks, Narelle, for teaching us and congratulations Mel for winning your first game.

Meeple Escape 2026

Despite numbers being down compared to previous years, Meeple Escape 2026 went off without a hitch. Meeple’s extended hours compared to our regular CBG events allowed many long-haul games were brought to the table this year, including Western Legends with every expansion, John Company, Galactic Cruise and 1846: The Race for the Midwest.

Several smaller games were also brought to the table. Zac decided the bring out the latest expansion of Heat: Pedal to the Metal, Rocky Roads, to the table. However, an unfortunate four on a stress card at a critical corner caused an early spin out leaving him far behind the other racers and unable to catch up, giving him his first “did not finish” of his racing career.

Tragedy Looper was another game played, an Anime themed game combing a murder mystery with a time travel loop and all the confusing and mysterious mechanics of both genres. While Zac and Tim put in a valiant effort to avert disaster despite their unfamiliarity with the game, the experienced mastermind behind the events got the upper hand and won out in the end.

On Sunday a quick game on Funfair was played between Zac and Josh, so Josh could complete his Meeple Challenge. Despite Zac actually deciding to build rides as opposed to several movie theatres this game and winning the critics choice award for the most themes featured, it fell just short of outscoring Josh’s own theme park that fulfilled several blueprint cards.

Rode in the door Friday afternoon chaps dusty and hat low on the brow. Others gathered on the plain and the tumble weeds cleared as dinner was served. After a fine repast Everyone gathered their mounts and headed off to our game of Western Legends. There was one among us that was just too legendary and left us in the dust. Eleanor took the crown. Many different paths were taken, Some spent all day in the saloon playing poker others took to droving herds of cattle to market. Some even took to more nefarious paths however the landholder won out.

I retired for the evening.

The sun broke over a lovely day and all the excited gamers reared their sleepy heads. After a filling breakfast I set out to make my fortune in India. 6 families formed The John Company to bring riches back to England and retire our relatives in the comfort they deserved. We all set out with good intentions however the Natives and poor management caused our undoing. After a mere 2 years the company failed and we were all sacked. India went about its business, and we moved on to other games.

I thought I might try my hand in the industrial revolution and joined a game of Brass Birmingham. A game I quite enjoy. Everyone had a great time however industry must not be my thing as I managed to tie for last. I noticed a theme here, trounced out on the open plain, crashed the company ending with a negative score and last in a game I am comfortable with.

Feeling like I needed a change I took on World Order. Playing as the benevolent USA I proceeded to roll tanks across the board and shake my fists at the other impudent nations. Unfortunately, I was almost lapped coming 99 points behind the lead country. World domination is not my thing. I took my leave and got some rest knowing the next day I would run a rocket ship tour company providing joy to all my passengers.

Another day took shape and I began running the tour company. I had a slow start and others had rockets built and tours running before I made my first launch. I began to catch up but was just too late. The tourists had fun as did I however I again managed to tie for last.

The weekend drew to a close and we said our farewells.

It truly was great to see everyone again and I only wish I could have played more games with more people. I always want to get to the table with the friendly people that I don’t see often enough. I look forward to next year. The big question is always what games I can play and with whom. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did.

Lynden Says…

I played 5 games during the camp. Saturday morning a group of us played John company We failed the company in the second round of the game. Causing the game to finish much earlier, most of us finishing on a negative score.

Saturday evening, I was in a game hosted by Justin, a new attendee to the camp, it was a very competitive game with a race to get each of the milestones. It was a fairly close scoring game with Maddie winning on $415, second place Sam $356, third place Lynden $280, fourth place Justin $160, fifth place Casual traveler $124 From Lynden

I didn’t actually play as many games as I thought as the one on Saturday was a long game.

Highlights for me were playing Heat on Friday with some expansions. That’s always a fun game. On Saturday I got my new Kickstarter Luthier to the table for a 6-hour game. All about buying items to make and sell Music instruments to composers and other famous people. It was great to finally have a 4 player game.

It was also good to play Condottiere after a long time. A battle to take over Italy on what seems like one of the smallest player boards out there.

Finally after a few games of Skull and The Crew Deep Sea the day was ended with a great game of Thunder Road. For my first ever game I ended up almost going out and destroying my cars after only a couple of rounds, I redemed myself once the fires were out though.

I got to try out the Monster Hunter World game. I’m only new to the franchise and excited to absorb as much of it as possible. Josh introduced me to Monster Hunter a few months ago so when he posted on Aftergame that he would be looking for players I jumped at the opportunity.

The idea of the game is that you play a Hunter. A member of a group of heroes that are supporting the environment by managing the gigantic monsters that roam the land. These monsters need to be identified, tracked and captured or destroyed.

The co-op game starts out with the tracking and identifying component. As a team the players read through a “Choose Your Own Adventure” style of story. The decisions chosen may reward resources or hints about the monster you are about to face. But. Each time you stop to check out a clue or to rest it costs you time. This is a deck of cards, that once it runs out you lose. So don’t delay the encounter too long or the clock might run out.

Once you find the Monster the game really kicks off. The Players and the Monster take turns until the time deck runs out or the players faint three times.

On the Monsters turn, you reveal a monster card and follow the instructions. It will move on the grid and try and attack the players. At the end of the card, it will say how many players will get a turn before the monster acts again.

On a Players turn, they play cards down on a stamina board. The cards played will use up places on the stamina board until you are able to, slowly, recover them. So, the more actions you take on one turn the fewer things you will be able to do on future turns. It is through this Stamina Management that the game shines. Do you play all the cards you can this turn, or do you take a slower turn to position yourself for a better turn next time around?

A fantastic game that I hope, maybe to play the campaign soon. The campaign sets up the other side of the video game with the crafting of equipment. Through the resources gathered in the story phase of the game and other components you get if you win the encounter you can craft better equipment and improve your chances of succeeding in the next fight!

With Meeple Escape just around the corner I’m looking forward to seeing our southern friends again and getting a few long games to the table. Already John Company and Twilight Imperium 4E are up on Aftergame! Can’t wait to see you all there.

Event #140 Wrap Up

Thunder Road: Vendetta was played multiple times. The expansion Carnage at Devil’s Run adds the ability for cars to be set on fire!

My game with Dave, Jake and Zac lived up the promise of high-speed carnage. I deployed my orange helicopter twice, shooting at Dave, the race leader even when my cars were way behind. On the final space of the race Dave was about to win when he triggered an earthquake and his car was destroyed by being knocked into an outcrop of rocks! Two other cars were also wrecked in the earthquake. I was able to destroy all remaining cars, taking the win as last one standing.

Game Report from Jim

Tonight I had the opportunity to bask in absolute glory as I whomped a veteran Everdell player, in the brand new ‘Everdell Emerland’. This would be Mel Beard. It wasn’t even close. All game me and Dave Dawkins copped trash talk across the table from this one, and we just had to cop it on the chin. Scores were revealed at the end, and someone had to eat their words, and everyone knew about it.

Ok, that’s enough rubbing it in.

It was a great game, the new Artisan cards, Artifacts and exploring the Jungle Ruins were really cool and upgraded resources were a nice touch too. I also got the opportunity to play Formaggio with Lawrence, Dave Dawkins and Narelle who also taught the game. A great game about cheese and wine aging with a revolving cheese wheel in the middle. Narelle taught this one wonderfully.

I also got to try out Thunder Road Vendetta, which was taught by Hobbo. The highlight of the game was me, Ronen and Hobbo smashin’ each other to bits, while Maurice was casually driving up the side minding his own business. With Hobbo, Ronen and me having 1 car left, I accidentally set off an earthquake which eliminated all 3 of us. This left Maurice as the last one standing, who pulled of a ‘Stephen Bradbury’ for the win.

Scythe Campaign Diary [SPOILER FREE]

Our Scythe: The Rise of Fenris campaign continues. The past 2 games resulted in a win for Crimea (Haydn) and The Republic of Polania (Carl). With the Nordic Kingdoms (Mike) and Saxony (Mel), still gaining benefits along the way.

The Rise of Fenris campaign works by the coins each player has at the end of each game get added to their bank. At the end of each chapter and beginning of the next, players may spend this money to purchase things.

Mel: “Campaign game 3 as the wolf and I’m starting the game with 2 iron. Game on!”

And so we begin. Chapter 3 was a very different game for me. I have been playing as the Republic of Polania, and this was the first game I didn’t get a mech on the home encounter. This resulted in a very, very, very slow start to my game. Locked on my island, needing to spend 5 extra turns to construct the first mech. Crimea wasn’t in the mood to wait that long.

Mel: “… and I have failed with my most miserable loss yet. Even though I got off to a flying start in the race to the factory, I handed the win over for a 3rd time, to Haydn for 2nd time, with 2 stars in the last turn for a 2nd time once again I did not see it coming.”

Crimea raced to the finish, but not until Nordic Kingdoms (Mike) had achieved the chapter objective, giving him a large advantage moving forward. With the story continuing we also unlocked the ability to include The Wind Gambit expansion in future games, AIRSHIPS! With Crimea speeding through the games, we will all need to rethink our strategies.

Mel: “Mike gained an invaluable advantage for the remainder of the campaign (no spoilers). After stealing 2 of my tunnels, Haydn dropped my score to an embarrassingly low $19 A score so low that even Carl in 3rd place nearly doubled my score on $36. A truce has been called between Mike, Carl and myself. Game on Haydn. Game on.”

At the end of chapter 3, we were given an opportunity to change faction. I was the only one to take the option. Mel did consider changing for a moment, then decided to stick with Saxony. Not having access to iron, therefore the ability to build mechs, in a game where Crimea seems determined to end the game in 10 turns or less was making things very frustrating. So, Clan Albion, here we go!

I have never played with The Invaders From Afar factions before so this should be new and exciting. Mike handed me the two-page rules for the new faction, a bag of tokens and we were off on our next chapter.

Mel: “Game 4 has begun and Haydn is off to a flying start already. Keep the remaining 3 of us in your thoughts”

This chapter had an alternative End Game condition. This resulted in Crimea racing even more than normal. I think the game ended in about 6-7 turns. It was fast. So fast that Crimea didn’t even realise it was over when they took their last turn. Haydn is definitely the one to watch out for in the coming games. While we are not sure how to stop him, I hope we can at least slow him down!

We are now halfway through, Mike keeps reminding us that the last game is what will determine the victor of the entire campaign. Our next set of games is scheduled for the second event in May, let’s see if Crimea can be stopped.

Thunder Road: Vendetta was played twice and produced lots of action. Cars were bunched up close together with speed then… smash – crash, leaving all 3 large vehicles damaged! Was a struggle to the end with Hobbo finding it difficult to keep any cars on the road. Gwyn managed to evade destruction and speed off for the win.

Orléans is a bag builder with lots of ways to generate points. Narelle’s deluxe components added to the fun of having so many tokens in the bag. Monks are wild but they do tend to leave for pilgrimages, so I found out not to depend on them too much. Dave had played before, Maurice and I were learning. This is an interesting game with a fascinating tempo. This is definitely a game that has to be tried once to learn then played again knowing the rhythm and feel.

Game Report by Mel

First game of 8 in the Rise of Fenris campaign, and I’ve drawn Saxony for the whole campaign (the wolf faction) 🐺

Thanks to Mike for bringing and teaching us this. I’m embarrassed to say that I unfortunately handed Haydn an easy win with 2 stars in the last turn 🫢 while I got a woeful 2 stars out total. But I still didn’t come last (thanks, Carl). Look out in game 2, Haydn. Count down to game 2 in 3.. 2.. 1..

For the second game I formed a quick alliance with Mike, gaining myself his river walking workers ability along with 9 coins. Score! In true Mel fashion I once again handed over the win, but to Carl this time, by not moving fast enough to steal his massive pile of resources that were ripe for the picking. Thankfully, I managed 2nd place this time. I think there was a 4th person in the game..? Who knows?

For my final game of the night, Narelle introduced Colin, Gwyn, Tim, Hobbo and myself to her new party game ‘Get Stacked’. This game is full of hilarious mini-games which left me laughing so hard I cried at the sheer ridiculousness of turning up to a board game night just to compete for who can catapult a pencil off the edge of a table into a box more than 2 feet away in the least amount of turns. The answer is Gwyn – in 2 turns. Ultimately though I took the win in the end by a point… does that make up for my abysmal Scythe performances?
